Hitchcock introduces Daniels Brenner's mom Lydia and Suzanne Pleshette, who plays his ex- girlfriend Annie long before it gets to the point of action. A strange real-life attack by herringwaters that smoked on Capitola, Calif., in 1961, believed to have occurred because of diatom poisoning in the digest of anchovies by the birds causing extreme aggression, was studied by Hitchcock in preparation for his film.
