She helped bring Tejano to mainstream fame by inventing new ways. It was an emerging star who's tragic death ruined it. As is the norm when a brilliant, genial and young performer dies early, people mourned her potential she was not yet reached. The result is that fans have been inspired over many years to dig to work even more to ensure that her achievements will not be forgotten. The tragic death by shooting of Tejano singer Selena caused a resurgence in the Latino community that can be likened to the deaths of Elvis Presley and John Lennon. Selena was a hugely adored singer throughout Latino communities across North America her music crossed barriers of cultures to influence those of youth as well as old. She was a flamboyant, sexually attractive stage performer sometimes hailed as Selena the Latina Madonna Selena was nonetheless considered a role model for her family. Off stage, she was actively involved in anti-drug campaigning and AIDS awareness programs.
